Walk for Women Volunteer Role
Volunteer Walking Champion
Please note: the role is only open to women; this exemption is permitted by the Equality Act 2010 where a service reduces barriers to engagement/ improves public engagement by being a single gender service, and where single-gender provision may be needed to protect potentially vulnerable users.
The Walk for Women is a free monthly walk open only to women. Each month it is held on a Saturday late morning, at a different location in Preston each time. It lasts between 1 – 1.5 hours with the option of meeting in a café after.
Walking volunteers are needed now in Preston – or walking champions as we like to call them. We are looking for women who feel, as we do, that it is important to help women to meet, make friends, and get some exercise.
We need Walking Champions who are understanding of barriers like anxiety, fear of unknown, and mixed ability, and will help us to plan walks so these barriers are overcome. If this is you, apply now, using the information below. We look forward to chatting with you. Training will be offered. We also have public liability insurance covering volunteers.
Saturday mornings and afternoons
Around 6-8 hours per month
*Attend and walk the Walk for Women monthly walks
*Sometimes host the Walk, by waiting at the meeting point, greeting the arriving attendees, handing out walk leaflets and checking who has arrived, then leading the walk
* Be present either at the front, middle or back of the walk group to check attendees are okay and prevent anyone from getting lost
*Engage with other attendees
*Help organise the walks: plan walks, check the route, make walk directions, print directions, make risk assessment, carry provisions like the first aid kit and a contactable phone on the day, distribute leaflets in local areas if needed
*Driving desirable but not essential as the walk routes are designed to be accessible by both car and public transport
*Benefits to the role: meet new people, women from all walks of life. Develop connections, develop responsibility, good exercise, explore Preston, and help empower local women by providing a free service which enables them to get some exercise and connect with others.
